Description
New Zealand is a seismically active country – lying at the edge of both the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates. The Pacific plate subducts beneath the Australian plate to the east of the North Island. This action is the cause for the active volcanism and geothermal activity throughout much of the North Island. There is another subduction zone in the south of the South Island, but here the Australian plate subducts beneath the Pacific plate. Between these zones, the angle at which the plates meet, and grind past each other, has pushed up the Southern Alps along the Alpine Fault.
It is the forces of these plate motions, and the resulting network of faults that run throughout the country, which are the cause for the formation of the mountain ranges, islands, and geographical features that New Zealand is well known for.
